The impatiens effect

ImpatientsCan’t do without impatiens? Miss the busy Lizzies? It is still possible to have that lavish impatiens effect by first planting bedding impatiens (Impatiens walleriana) for late spring and early summer, followed by New Guinea impatiens (Impatiens hawkeri) from summer onwards.

The reason for getting busy Lizzies in early is that conditions are dryer and therefore less favourable for downy mildew in early summer. Once the summer rainfall areas experience more rain, from January onwards, it will be the turn of the New Guinea impatiens to shine, as they are resistant to downy mildew.

Managed this way, a garden can have impatiens from early October all the way through to May, or until the first frost...

November

burgendy-iceburg19Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation.

Continue mulching.

Keep an eye out for pests around the garden. Try to keep the use of chemical controls to a minimum - they may kill off pests, but they also kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them such as ladybirds.
